Council of Volunteer Organizations in Haifa

The Council of Volunteer Organizations in Haifa is the umbrella association for all the NGO’s (non- governmental organizations) and volunteer groups which operate in Haifa. The Council is an independent, not for profit organization, established by the various volunteer groups, and for their benefit. The Council believes that bringing about greater awareness within various sectors, creating solidarity and promoting cooperation within the overall community will enhance the influence of the “third sector” in the overall Israeli society.  

Through its work to strengthen social responsibility and involvement, and  add to the professionalization of the various groups within the “third sector”, the Council seeks to improve coordination and cooperation among various organizations and between sectors and create a network of community organizations and community groups working within the city resulting in a more just and fair society

GOALS:

·    Strengthen the social organizations operating in Haifa.
·    Promote volunteerism in Haifa.
·    Provide for and strengthen inter-organizational and inter-sector cooperation as well as among various communities.
·    Coordinate between normal and emergency requirements, and resources with respect to volunteerism and community needs.
·    Advance public awareness about what volunteer groups really do.
·    Enhance the influence of the citizens on the decision process in Haifa.

WHAT DOES THE COUNCIL OF VOLUNTEER ORGANIZATIONS PROPOSE? 

Courses and advanced education programs for Council leaders: Courses for managers of volunteerism,  courses for members of the boards of directors of public organizations courses in raising funds, courses in developing management skills workshops in First Aid, dealing with stress and crisis, public marketing, studies various specific subjects, and an Annual Conference.

Working Groups: Joint working groups for the “Third Sector” and the City administration to organize residents and other institutions with the purpose of strengthening coordination and division of functions,  safeguarding resources, elimination of duplication, and improving the ability to deal with social problems and community issues identified by the participants.

The Haifa-Boston inter-government network: At present there is a group within the Council which integrates new immigrants with a forum of chairmen and managers of non-governmental organizations and deals with issues of economic and social justice. An annual program considers social issues in Haifa in depth, and works in developing leaders, providing management tools, and maintaining an on-going conversation with parallel organizations including a week’s seminar in Boston.

Working Support for Volunteers: Recruiting, assigning, and improving necessary skills for persons supervising volunteers, as well as recognition of volunteers’ efforts, and insurance of volunteers.

Collection of Information: The database for publishing a book describing the organizations in Haifa, creating an internet site, and a professional library.
We invite you to be partners in realizing our vision to provide responsible leadership, increase involvement, and encourage initiative to enhance a responsibility for a mixed population, all intended to assist in bringing about social change.
